The main keyword of Digital Transformation, or 4th Industrial Revolution could be summarized as “Value creation through integration of data-based On-Line and Off-Line world”. However, EPC & O&M processes of Power & Utility, Oil & Refinery, and Plant & Engineering industry are still being managed based on a lot of drawings, documents and experiences rather than data.
Thanks to the rapid development of digital technology which enables 4th Industrial Revolution, a new framework (e.g. RAMI 4.0) is also being required for integrated operation of engineering data which connects the entire end-to-end processes from construction, operation & maintenance, asset mgmt. to decommission based on the results of the design in perspective of plant lifecycle in Engineering/Plant area. The capital projects industry is experiencing breakthrough results in traditional performance metrics through the adoption of Advanced Work Packaging (AWP). Safety, cost, quality, schedule reliability and productivity are among the areas positively improved through the adoption of AWP. As an increasing number of owner-operators in the industrial construction sector document a successful ‘step change’ in project productivity through the adoption of AWP, contracts are increasingly mandating the utilization of AWP. To date, the positive results from the adoption of AWP have largely been on a project-by-project basis.
Leading owner-operators and their contractor partners are just now establishing enterprise-wide programs in AWP. Through the convergence of (i) AWP methodologies with (ii) Lean Construction techniques in collaborative contracting and (iii) increasing adoption of digital project technologies, the capital projects industry is poised to witness a transformation in performance and reliability. Dr. Ted Blackmon is Founder & Chairman of Construct-X and CEO of Jovian Ventures, a next-generation launchpad for start-ups focused in the capital projects industry. As a visionary and serial entrepreneur, Ted helped to pioneer the market for Advanced Work Packaging and 4D/5D/XD BIM in the early 2000 timeframe with the invention of the ConstructSim and OpSim platforms
Dr. Blackmon’s early career achievements began as a member of the highly successful Mars Pathfinder Mission in 1997, where he developed and operated the MarMap software program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, planning and monitoring the daily activities for the Sojourner rover (the first robotic vehicle to reach the surface of another planet) in Mission Control. Ted went on to leverage MarsMap as a pioneering technology commercialization endeavor at NASA, with aim to address sustainability and resource challenges here on Earth.
Through his current work with high impact start-up companies and industry organizations, Dr. Blackmon continues to lead the way in transforming the capital projects industry towards fully digital project execution, delivering a step change to clients in productivity and performance improvement.
The early career accomplishments of Dr. Blackmon were recognized through a Penn State Alumni Achievement Award recipient in 2005, and a FIATECH Outstanding Career Research Award in 2013. Dr. Blackmon received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State University and graduated at the top of his class, appointed as Student Marshall in 1992. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1998.

With Strategic Building Innovation (SBI), Dr. Kam will demonstrate how owners drive and standardize secure, cloud-based collaboration within their projects, enabling the delivery of project BIM’s and data that are interoperable with facility and asset management repositories, and suitable as background information for future improvement projects. With Stanford University’s Center for Integrated Facility Engineering (CIFE), Dr. Kam will share a decade of research and applications of the Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) scorecard—a holistic framework for evaluating the interrelationship among smart design, construction, operation and smart cities used to measure the level and impact of innovative and industrialized construction. Dr. Calvin Kam is the Founder and CEO of Strategic Building Innovation ·bimSCORE. Calvin’s ventures, incorporated in USA, Hong Kong, and Singapore, are dedicated to optimizing the value of the built environment through continuous improvement in decision-making, process, technology, and business.
Dr. Kam is the Director of Industry Programs and an Adjunct Professor at Stanford University’s Center for Integrated Facility Engineering (CIFE), where he specializes in strategic innovation such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) and Sustainable Developments.
Calvin is a Co-founder and the Senior Program Expert of the National 3D-4D-BIM Program with GSA Public Buildings Service, which began in 2003. Under Calvin’s management, GSA has required BIM submission in its capital program; published the GSA BIM Guide Series; established a network of GSA BIM Champions across the nation; successfully influenced multiple BIM software vendors to incorporate open standards according to GSA business rules; formalized international partnerships with Finland, Norway, and Denmark; while earning a number of national and international awards.
He is also the Vice President for Strategic Innovation with Optima—an award-winning integrated real estate developer, architectural firm and general contractor.
Since 2011, the Singapore government’s Building Construction Authority has appointed Calvin as an international expert to advise its construction productivity and BIM roadmap; China National BIM Standards and National BIM Union have appointed Calvin as the only international Honorary Director. Calvin is also a Principal Investigator with Disney Research China.
Elected by the Knowledge Leadership Assembly of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Calvin serves on the 2013-15 AIA Board Knowledge Committee; he is the 2011-2013 National Co-Chair of AIA Center for Integrated Practice, and was the 2010 & 2011 National Chair of AIA Technology in Architectural Practice (TAP) Knowledge Community. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a powerful tool to facilitate significant increases in efficacy (efficiency + effectiveness) throughout the facilities lifecycle. While their application is scalable and provides multiple benefits to all members of the project delivery team, there are limits to what can be achieved if the owner is not effectively engage.
Designers, builders, and consultants can provide fragmented solutions to implementing BIM, but owners “own” the life cycle management. BIM benefits are significantly hindered unless owners actively engage to establish life cycle objectives, simplification and coordination of key transition points, and enforcement of team actions towards life cycle objectives.
This session will discuss a lifecycle management perspective for BIM, and its relation to asset management and analytics (business intelligence). In addition it will provide insights into how owners can become valuable members of the project delivery team’s BIM efforts, and describe why owners must fulfill this leadership role for broader BIM success.
Dr. Russ Manning currently serves as the Virtual Design & Construction Engineer for the Pennsylvania State University and Founding Principal of Manning Consult LLC.
His perspective includes previous work with the US Defense Health Agency (DHA) as the Chief for Operations and Asset Visibility managing the US Defense’s military health systems enterprise asset visibility and analytics, and managing the facilities operations annual $1B program supporting approximately 70M GSF, over 2300 building, across 13 countries. Prior to the branch chief position, he served in various positions in planning and programming, execution of project and program management for capital and repair related projects, and project integration supporting facilities life cycle management.
Specific BIM initiatives prior to his current position included: Leading the Military Health System’s Minimum BIM Requirements (MBR) development, which was one of the first enterprise wide BIM standards for a healthcare system in the US. He also served as a past chair of a collaborative workgroup within the National Institute for Building Sciences (Healthcare BIM Consortium) focused on advancing BIM success for the healthcare market sector which included US Government, Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health and other US healthcare owners.
Dr. Manning received his under graduate degree in at Penn State in Architectural Engineering (Mechanical Systems Emphasis) and his PhD from the Architectural Engineering Department researching Acquisition Strategies.
